I'll share some of the comments I made on the audio post and expand them because they are questions brought up here that I didn't see answered. For the dead animals, some were shot but animals eat everything. There would be the vats still left out in the open, licking cups clean, etc. Another possible explanation for it was the animals would need to be killed so they didn't start eating dead bodies before authorities got there?

Some were already dead while he continued to speak on the death tape. Some of the kids were screaming from seeing dead bodies.

He said about the kids:

I don't care how many screams you hear (as babies are screaming and crying no in the background), I don't care how many anguished cries, death is a million times less sufferable than 10 more days in this life...Adults, adults - I call on you to stop this nonsense to stop this now.

He was admonishing them for not dying right - then blaming them for the kids going into hysterics... No idea how many were dead at the point of the recording ending however, but they rehearsed to have everyone dead within 40 minutes or so. The bodies might actually have been "assigned death positions" - like assigned seats in school. They'd rehearsed this dozens if not hundreds of times. The families were encouraged to die together. So it's quite possible during rehearsals, they all had spots to go to and take their drink with them (first shooting the infants with the needleless syringes and carrying them to their "spot" to die in each other's arms.. especially if parents were concerned the children wouldn't stay there when they died so the infants and toddlers were actually dead in the parents arms before the parents did their deed). The other thought might be they were coached to lay face down - to avoid those waiting to drink having to see their faces with tongues lolling, faces contorting, eyes rolled back in head... well, you guys have seen this forum, you get it.

A piece of the "potion/medicine/drink" was Phenergan. As someone who suffered severe morning sickness, this is an impressive anti-vomiting medication. It also makes you extremely sleepy as a sedative, it's an anti-allergen and it's an anti-convulsant (among even more uses). It kept people's bodies from throwing up the toxic mix as most surely would have done and it kept them from having allergic reactions (which would surely caused panic among those waiting to drink) which would have made for some very scary images and freaked enough out not to die.

The concoction itself was - for all intents and purposes - a brilliant mix to ensure quick, visibly easy death from all who took it. Evil, but brilliant. It had all the pieces of medications and/or poisons that would ensure about 5 different ways to die from it to keep any one person from surviving just one method or another method.

The last thought on the cups and syringes, some of the people there were reported to be severely ill. The jungle was doling out disease like candy. If they couldn't keep anything down WITH the aforementioned Phenergan, they'd have to inject. Conversely, if an infant wouldn't swallow or elderly couldn't, they could shoot them up too. He had this planned severely. Every minute detail was rehearsed, scripted and the stuff was on hand and ready to go. He knew the mix to do it with, he knew how to get people to even believe him in the first place, let alone to kill themselves by the hundreds, he knew some wouldn't go so they'd need to be shot so it's very likely he also planned to have needles ready for those who wanted to but couldn't take the mix (and of course, some who refused... but the death tape doesn't have any dissenters after the first couple minutes so I really doubt many were forcibly injected give the timetable we do know from a few survivors and what we know about rehearsals).

It's said Jones didn't have a lisp or slurring when he started his whole craziness, that it came about towards the end in Jonestown only because of his heavy, heavy drug use of sedative type meds such as Valium and Phenergan. So this speech may have sounded even dumber to us - but many of the followers apparently were supposed to have known him when he was charismatic. I think it's the reason he may have shot himself. He might have been able to consume the drink and not died because the downers in it, he'd already been abusing for several years. His only shot with it would be the poison getting him - but his tolerance to so many drugs, he might actually not even have been killed by the cyanide - the other drugs were already found in his system or testified by his son that he took them in the few years prior.
