Re: Jonestown Massacre Photos (18 November 1978)
The ambush at the Kaituma airstrip resulted in the deaths of Congressman Ryan, three journalists and a defecting Temple member, and the wounding of nine others, including Jackie Speier, Congressman Ryan's aide. She was shot five times and had to hang on for 22 hours in the jungle before help arrived. She survived to become a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing California's 14th district in 2008.

Re: Jonestown Massacre Photos (18 November 1978)
I think those letters addressed to "Dad" are actually the confessions that people were forced to write about themselves for Jones. It was a way of keeping people in line and to have control over them completely. Also, most of the people there didn't just line up for a drink then go and lie down to die, however neatly the bodies are arranged into rows. The reason for the masses of syringes was that people who wouldn't drink willingly from the poisoned kool-aid drum were injected or forced to inject others (especially children) at gun point. And I also read in a book a survivor wrote that she was told by Jones that they had actually had a couple of "dry-runs", as it were, to see who would and who wouldn't drink willingly so I'm guessing that's how they knew to buy so many syringes.
