When the Red Army advanced into Germany they used rape for revenge. But they did not save rape as a punishment solely for the women they considered the enemy. Yes, many German women and children were viciously raped, sometimes gang-raped to death. Less discussed is what the Red Army did when they liberated internment, concentration and death camps.

The Red Army raped any woman they could get their hands on. I offer no reason for this behavior but almost universally it was behavior absent from other Allied forces. If you have read a lot about the liberation of Auschwitz, then you already know that the Red Army raped skeletal Jewish women, women so emaciated that they had virtually no secondary sexual characteristics. They raped Russian women, their own countrywomen. They even raped women suffering from typhus, at the risk of their own health. It was indiscriminate and could hardly be based on revenge as they raped the very women ostensibly they were there to liberate. For all the French and American excesses during the fall of Berlin, they did not rape women from concentration or death camps.

There was something berserker-like in the Russian advance into Germany. It is common for conquering countries to use rape as a weapon against the women of their enemy. War will always be that way. Less common is raping to death children, one's own countrywomen and women so starving and ill that any assault would kill them, women who had been the victim of the enemy.

So we can discuss until we are blue in the face the notion of rape as revenge or how the Russians had suffered in WW2 but it doesn't explain the gang rapes of little girls and liberated concentration camp victims. There are theories as to why this happened but it is undeniable that the Russians deviated from a script as old as war. I cannot think of another conflict wherein the conquerors raped their own women who had been victimized by the enemy.

It's so sick that Germany and Austria even have a memorial day (May 8th) that is called "Tag der Befreiung" (day of liberation). No-one here even questions what actually happened when Nazi Germany was supposedly "liberated".
People always talk about how Germans were brainwashed by the Nazis. You know who brainwashed them even more? The allied forces. And it's still ongoing.
