If this was during the Gulag all you need to do is do some research on the Gulags themselves, as I've read and as I understand it gang-rape of women plagued the 'work'ing population of the camps.

I find it easy to believe that in Russia during this time (as these are old photographs) that rape was occurring on a rather large scale.

Oh please don't play the race card. The Nazis set a precedent in that they set out to kill 11 million innocent people out of purifying Europe for the "Aryan" race, as well as anyone got in their way of their purpose. It was a precedent because the media played such a huge part for the first time, and it was the first time we saw how a nation could be held hostage by the twisted dreams of a mad man, only realizing he was bringing them to their knees far too late.

I do agree that not enough attention was paid to what the Japanese were doing. I think this might come down to the fact that for the most part a large portion of the globe probably looked at the Pacific theater as almost an exclusive American operation, fought on scattered islands, even though the British, Australians, Netherlands and a few more countries had colonies and interests in the area, whereas the European theater involved an entire continent as well as upper Africa. The Japanese got off a lot more softly than their European counterparts when it came to war crimes trials. (I personally would have called for Hirohito to have been put on trial.) I again put this down to press coverage. The main two things the world likely remembers about the Pacific theater as far as war atrocities go are the Rape on Nanking and the Bataan Death March, while Europe you had an entire continent turned into a charnel house...the news reels ate it up when the Allies began liberating the labor and concentration camps, seeing the true aim of Hitler's War.

But I don't think anyone who follows history will deny that Pol Pot, the Muslim extremists, Chechen separatists, and the ethnic cleansing that happened in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia were not just as evil as anything Hitler or even Stalin had done.

What made the nazis so horrifying was that it was genocide on an industrial scale, planned and executed over a period of years.

The nazis went through the courts, had the Jews slowly stripped of their property, rights and finally declared "non-human", then built camps to collect, murder and dispose of the bodies.

In other words, it wasn't some regime or soldiers run amok, it was the measured, deliberate, calculated murder of millions.

The fact that so many freely planned, participated, profited and finally denied what they were doing adds an element not encountered before.
