Macabre and Creepy....especially the ones that have their eyes open. Something is bothering me....there is one with two children, a boy and a girl, standing up...are they dead?? They really went all out for the dead in those days, almost too much so.

Absolutely fascinating collection of photos - thank you so much for posting these.

The autopsy pictures of the students smoking pipes were humorous. That was a practice back then to help with the smell especially when autopsies were performed on already decomposing corpses. I have performed many autopsies and let me tell you even the freshest death still stinks.
Those were my favorite pictures of the bunch. I didn't even think about them using pipes to mask the smell. You learn something new every day.

I have my own collection of 19th centry postmortem photographs, I adore them, they are some of my most prizes possesions, I will post them
