The wife of a wealthy businessman repeatedly stabbed herself to death at the couple’s £700,000 mansion – just two days after becoming a grandmother for the first time, it emerged today.
Mother-of-two Bernadette McConchie, 57, died of ‘multiple stab wounds’ which are believed to have been self-inflicted, police said.
Mrs McConchie, married to former Tesco director Neil, was found at the couple’s home in Milton Malsor, Northamptonshire, on Wednesday night.
Inspector Daemon Johnson, of Northamptonshire Police, said: ‘The woman was found at 5.10pm [Wednesday] with multiple stab wounds. She died from her injuries.
‘There are no suspicious circumstances and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death.
‘We offer our condolences to the family and we are now in the process of preparing a report for the coroner.’
Mrs McConchie had recently found out the partner of her son Connor, 31, had given birth.
Devastated Mr McConchie is executive chairman and managing director of Lloyd Fraser, a logistics firm he founded in 1987 at old aircraft hangers on the old Bitteswell Aerodrome, near Lutterworth, Leicestershire .
The location blossomed into Magna Park, and has gone on to become one of the main logistics locations in the UK.
Former teacher Mrs McConchie worked at Collingtree Primary CEVA School before retiring several years ago.
Friends and neighbours expressed shock at the death of the 'lovely quiet Irish lady'.
Friend Kevin Smith said: ‘They were a very quiet family, like to keep everything private.
‘But she was a lovely quiet Irish lady, she had been a teacher a while back but retired some years ago.
‘They had lived in that house for 12 years now. Her husband is a director of six or seven companies so they were a well off family. It’s very sad to hear that she passed away.’
Keith Griffin, who lives opposite the couple, said: ‘The police came to our door in the evening and told us a neighbour had died and told us it was Bernie.
‘We can’t believe it, she was an absolutely lovely woman. We didn’t see her about a great deal but we’d known them both for about 10 years. She could be great fun to be with.’
Mr Griffin’s wife Janis added: ‘We saw her on Monday in the car as she was taking the dog somewhere. She asked whether we had heard her news.
‘She said her son and his partner had their first baby about two weeks ago. She was very excited about it. She should have had lots to look forward to in her life.’
