One family friend told journalist Ty Steele that Sanford had been battling PTSD.

'It's hard to feel sad for someone who did something so terrible, and I still feel sad. I had heard through family events that he had had PTSD,' she said.

'He would make comments occasionally and it was something that was kind of talked about. It wasn't talked about in depth. so I don't know the depth of his issues.'

Pictures taken from social media accounts of Sanford's wife and loved ones reveal they were a conservative, Christian family who were dealing with the stress of their son's devastating Congenital Hyperinsulinism diagnosis.

n one image, Sanford poses alongside his wife and son wearing a pro-Trump shirt with the message: 'Make Liberals Cry Again.'

The shirt, which sells for $15.95 on eBay, has a cartoon style picture of Trump with his fist in the air, and reads: 'Re-elect Trump 2020.'

Sanford's loved ones, including his wife and both of his parents, also frequently shared pro-Trump messaging on their social media pages.

On Sunday, just hours before Sanford's name was released to the public, his mother had shared a lengthy post about Trump and hoping he would bring in tighter rules for Congress members.

'Life isn't a FREE RIDE!! No matter what JOB you have!!' she wrote.

She also frequently posted about conservative activist Charlie Kirk's death, indicating she believed there was 'more to' the shooting.

Shortly after his death, she penned a moving tribute stating: 'I, like many others, have been feeling a deep pain in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk's assassination.



Seems a lot of these shooters have PTSD.

War vet dealing with PTSD and a son with an illness. Odd for him to attack a Christian church with he himself being a Christian and a conservative.

I hate to speculate so early but I wonder if he blamed God for his sons illness? Maybe he had a history with that church? Guess we have to wait and see but this is terrible.

When Burton City Council candidate Kris Johns heard that someone shot churchgoers and burned down the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Sept. 28 in nearby Grand Blanc, he said not once did he think it was the man he spoke to while canvassing less than a week prior who went on a tirade against the church and described Mormons as "the antichrist."

Guess we have a motive.
