Incident reported on Monday, 18MAY26 at ~11:30(PDT) at the Islamic Center of San Diego in Clairemont, California.

Five dead total, including shooters.

Three men — two visitors and a security guard were killed at the scene. The apparent head-shot victim shown lying on the pavement in front of the mosque is the center's security guard.


The two shooters, Cain Clark age 17, and Caleb Vazquez age 18 fled in a white SUV belonging to Clark's mother. They drove into the adjacent suburban neighborhood and shot at a couple of passersby. A round struck a gardener in his helmet but he escaped injury. They stopped in the middle of a street approximately three blocks from the Islamic Center and killed themselves by self-inflicted gunshots.

Federal and senior law enforcement officials have identified Cain Clark (17) and Caleb Vazquez (18) as the suspects.

Investigators recovered anti-Islamic writings from the suspect's vehicle, and the phrase "hate speech" was written on at least one of the weapons used. One suspect left behind a note referencing white pride.

Shortly before the shooting, Cain Clark's mother contacted authorities to report that her suicidal son had left the house in camouflage gear with a friend, stealing her car and multiple firearms.

The attack resulted in the deaths of three adult mosque staff members, including a security guard named Amin Abdullah. Police credited the guard's swift actions with preventing the gunmen from entering an on-site school, saving the lives of the children and teachers inside.

Digital forensics teams are actively auditing the phones, gaming accounts, and computer hard drives of Cain Clark and Caleb Vazquez. Investigators want to know if they were acting entirely alone or if they were radicalized by online, right-wing extremist cells.

Federal authorities are reviewing how the 17-year-old suspect bypassed secure storage to steal three firearms from his mother's residence. They are also analyzing the specific scrawlings found on the weapons.

Initial reports indicate that Clark was an online student at James Madison High School and had previously participated in wrestling. Very little background information has been made public yet regarding the 18-year-old suspect, Caleb Vazquez.

Around 11:45 AM, immediately after fleeing the mosque, the suspects drove through the surrounding Clairemont neighborhood. They pulled up next to a local landscaper working nearby and opened fire directly from inside the car.

Because the car door window was blown out partially during this shooting, the car became highly recognizable. A citizen spotted the damaged white BMW moving down the road and immediately phoned emergency services.

Guided by the civilian tip, police located the car stopped a few streets away on Hatton Street. By the time officers safely breached the vehicle, both teens had already turned the weapons on themselves.
