Seems to be a common theme, although even the guy in this thread's OP got off light -- unlike a guy my pop once told me about.

He and his airborne buddies were behind enemy lines in 'Nam teaching LRRP to a tag-along grunt. At one point, they caught said grunt tokin' up. They didn't want some stoned moron fucking things up; so they told him to stay out of the way until they were done with the mission, and informed him that his drug use would be reported to higher-ups upon their return.

On the way back, the grunt was walking a little too high up on a ridge and tripped one of the claymores that my pop's unit had laid out because he forgot where it had been set. Pop said he remembered seeing the guy's body fly overhead. He didn't seem particularly broken up by the loss when he told me.

Lesson: drugs and booby-trapped combat zones don't mix.
