Hiker Falls 1,000 Feet to Her Death, Gets Eaten by Vultures
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/worl...icle-1.1336000 A hiker who plunged 1,000 feet to her death was eaten by Griffon vultures before she could be rescued. The 52-year-old's bones, clothes and shoes were all that remained after being pounced on by the scavengers in the French/Spanish Pyrenees mountain range. They devoured her body in just 40 minutes. The woman is believed to have died during the April 14 fall, rather than from being attacked by the birds. But the way her corpse was eaten has sparked a campaign among locals who want the vulture population to be culled. They claim anti-BSE European rules stating dead animals can't be dumped in fields has caused the hungry birds to turn to live sheep and cows for their lunch. "You can't imagine what it is like to see an animal eaten alive," said local farmer Alain Larralde after seeing vultures attack and start eating a live cow. TF1 reports that the female hiker was with two friends when she slipped and fell down the slope on the Pic de Pista. |

I think it's a good idea. Earth friendly, circle of life and all that. The people who want some of the vultures killed are just silly. What they did was perfectly natural. It's not like they killed the woman.

they would quickly regret getting rid of the vultures. if they are thriving there, then there is a reason. they arent predators, they are scavengers. they dont hunt people or animals unless the animal is very close to death. i'd be honored to be able to have the chance to have a sky burial. |
