I'm a little confused. Sharia law allows for the death penalty in cases such as this one. However, execution can be avoided if the family of the deceased accept a "blood money" payment from the perpetrator. It seems that they did. Exactly why though, I can't imagine.

I don't understand, Muslims are offended by so many things yet raping a child only gives light punishment.

He was already setting up the ground work for defense: He doubted her virginity (he even had her examined). The age does not matter in cases of pre-marital sex. The family I'm betting knew this-perhaps financial punishment is the only "justice" they would ever hope to see. It's a disgusting situation all around and the political ideology, er..excuse me, "religion", of Islam is a disgrace. Any woman who converts to it is a traitor to her sex.
