Re: Baby Elephant Rejected by Mom Wept Inconsolably
They are simply one of the most amazing animals. They say they mourn the loss of a family member for weeks/months and have more similarities to humans in that respect than any other animal.

Re: Baby Elephant Rejected by Mom Wept Inconsolably
3 reasons i can think of are that the mother is sick or has a psychological defect, or she could sense the baby was defective. In nature it is common for an adult parent, usually the mother, to kill defective offspring. It is not malice or cruelty on their part, it is more to do with practicallity. Raising defective offspring can pose a threat to the genetic survival of the herd. Then again maybe the mother is just a cunt. |

another theory I heard, and that sounds likely, is that the mother rejected him because she was artificially inseminated.

Re: Baby Elephant Rejected by Mom Wept Inconsolably
Very unlike elephants. They respect family and as previous posts have stated, actually grieve over skeletal remains of other elephants. The post from "Banana Dick" makes the mosts sense, as the elephant might have less maternal instinct, BUT it still carried the infant and birthed it. Very strange, indeed. After some mother elephants die, the aunts will take over the care of the baby elephant. I just don't understand this.
