13 Year Old Dies After Ingesting Peanut Butter at Camp
Food in the News July 31, 2013 at 3:08PM by Zoe Bain Growing up with nut allergies can be extremely difficult, especially since children are often exposed to peanut butter or products containing traces of nuts. According to the New York Daily News, Natalie Giorgi, a 13-year-old girl from the Sacramento, California, area died at a summer camp after accidentally consuming a dessert that contained peanut butter. The Giorgi family was staying at a family camp called Camp Sacramento when Natalie ate a Rice Krispies treat that she didn't know contained peanut butter. The family was vigilant about Natalie's peanut allergy, but unfortunately the accident led to her untimely death. Natalie's father, a doctor, administered epinephrine pens at the scene, but the young girl went into cardiac arrest and was ultimately pronounced dead at a hospital. The family released a statement encouraging the public to take food allergies seriously, "While our hearts are breaking over the tragic loss of our beautiful daughter Natalie, it is our hope that others can learn from this and realize that nut and food allergies are life threatening. Caution and care for those inflicted should always be supported and taken." |

Re: 13 Year Old Dies After Ingesting Peanut Butter at Camp
Poor girl. Why would anyone provide food with peanuts in it at a public event? It seems like there were enough people at the camp that peanuts shouldn't be there. You never know what everyone is allergic to and since it doesn't take much exposure to peanuts to have a deadly reaction, it's just not worth the risk.

If your kid gets taken out by a rice krispy treat, maybe life wasn't meant to work out for them on the planet earth... just sayin'... |

Aww If I were that allergic to any food item would never eat anything I hadn't prepared with my own two hands, nor would I let my kid eat anything if I wasn't there to see it made. |

Re: 13 Year Old Dies After Ingesting Peanut Butter at Camp
Was this allergy listed on her application to attend this camp ? We have form upon form for parents/carers to fill in when we run any type of play scheme/group and anything we make foodwise is checked and double checked. Someone's head should roll for this tragic but preventable death.
