Re: A British 999 Call About A Stolen Snowman
I know very little about England other than that there are several distict accents. There's the pompous educated sounding accent and then the barely intelligable accents of the uneducated. I never understood why it was so other than perhaps England has it's own types of hillbillies and rednecks to deal with. Would love to know a bit more on it.

Love it how the dispatchers voice falls an octave into that disgust tone and she barely keeps her disgust under control when she discovers it's a snowman. "At the end of the day you don't expect someone to nick your snowman" |

Re: A British 999 Call About A Stolen Snowman
The accent that you hear is associated with East London and Essex but mostly Essex. We don't all speak like that but it's the one that the media shows the most. We have this reputation of being slutty and stupid, again not true but we do have them and they're the ones that get their own tv show. The 'farmer' accent of places like Suffolk, Norfolk and SW coast of England are the nearest we have to hillbillies but they're no where near as bad. Actually they're great people. |

Re: A British 999 Call About A Stolen Snowman
That helps a bit. Actually the term "Hillbilly" is a bit of a catchall for rural people living in the hill country of the Appalacian mountains and gets applied to other areas as well. They tend to have a bit of a nasal twang for what ever reason. Inbreeding is more common than people like to admit. One social worker I met while on vacation told me that about half of the young girls coming in for aid would claim to not know who the father was. Most times it was a close relative and they were ashamed to admit it. When you travel through these impoverished areas you begin to realize why things are like that. The hill country does not lend itself to commercial uses very easily. Moonshining is still the best way to make money there.
