I've worked in Europe for companies that also bypassed safety mechanisms to increase productivity and save money. At Caterpillar Trucks the maintenance department fitted plugs into the safety locks of the hydraulic presses so people could still feed stuff into them while they were coming down. When we had a safety inspection team on the premises we were told to take the plugs out and put them out of sight, this is just one example of many I've come across.
