A woman died after falling from a cliff swing ride at the Maliuyan Waterfall scenic spot in Huaying, Sichuan province on May 3, after her safety rope snapped immediately after she left the platform.

As she fell, she reportedly slammed into the cliff face rocks just a few dozen feet below the level of the platform she was on. The ravine is 68 meters (550 feet) deep. The cable snapped or let loose right away so she wasn't in the free fall but hit that face rock.

After hitting that initial rocky ledge or protrusion, she became snagged/entangled, which is why she was seen dangling rather than falling the full 168 meters to the canyon floor.

The hoisting was the staff pulling her back up that relatively short distance to the platform to get her to an ambulance. She was still wearing a full-body harness with multiple attachment points. Some of these secondary lines or parts of the broken equipment became entangled with the cliff face or the ride's structure after she hit the rocks.

She did not die instantly at the scene. She was retrieved by rescue teams but was pronounced dead en route to the hospital due to the catastrophic trauma from the fall and impact.

The Huaying municipal government officially classified the incident as a production safety responsibility accident.

Preliminary findings point to enterprise negligence. Specifically, investigators are examining the staff’s failure to act on the victim's warnings and potential defects in the safety equipment.

Experts noted that the park, which had only been operational for about 40 days, appeared to have violated national mandatory standards for cliff swings that were implemented in March 2023.

Local public security authorities have launched a formal investigation into the responsible entities and personnel. This includes the operator, Chongqing Adventure Camp, and the specific staff members who ignored Liu's pleas.

The facility was ordered to close immediately for rectification and remains shut indefinitely while a full safety review of all equipment is conducted.

Official reports state that a compensation agreement has already been reached between the park operator and the victim's family. In a similar case in Chongqing, in 2017, families have received around 870,000 yuan ($120,000 USD) compensation.

The ride operators and park managers can be charged with "causing a major accident through negligence" under Article 134 of China's Criminal Law. For a fatal accident, the standard sentence is up to 3 years of fixed-term imprisonment and in cases where the circumstances are especially serious such as ignoring repeated safety warnings from the victim, the sentence can increase to 3 to 7 years.

The operating company, Chongqing Adventure Camp, faces heavy fines and the potential for a permanent ban from the industry or revocation of business licenses.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities focusing on why the staff launched the ride despite the victim's audible pleas that her harness was loose.
