Rochester Police said an officer shot and killed a man Wednesday morning as they say he moved toward police while armed with a "large knife."

The incident happened on West Main Street, right by the Open Door Mission.

Rochester Police Captain Mark Mura said officers were called to the Mission just before 3 a.m. for a call of a man armed with the knife. Mura said the man had grabbed the knife from inside the mission but had left the building by the time officers got there. Officers quickly found him. Mura said the man was cutting himself with the knife and making threats to kill officers.

Police traveled onto Cascade Drive then Main Street walking, trying to talk the man down; but in front of Open Door Mission, security video and body camera video then shows him suddenly charging at police with the knife, and one of them shooting about five times.

Police requested an officer with a taser, but Mura said the man "moved forward" at police with the knife when he says an officer shot the man at least one time in the upper body.

Sister Kelly Diranco volunteers at the Mission. She says it started after the man violated one of their policies.

"He was told to leave immediately. He had broken out into violent behavior and had threatened to harm, and once he was outside he had a knife on him," Diranco said.

The Monroe County District Attorney's Office and the New York Attorney General's Office have been looking into the case. Officials say unlike other recent high-profile cases, this one does not go directly to the AG because it involved an armed suspect.

City officials said the police involved have been put on administrative leave while the case is investigated.

According to the police-released timeline, the following occurred:

T.J. left his home in Gates earlier Tuesday and visited a store in Gates between 3 and 4 p.m., where a person bought food for him. He then followed the person to his home and Gates police were "ultimately contacted out of concern because T.J. was walking around with no shoes on," a released stated.
"At no time during the course of the interaction with the Gates Police Department did T.J. exhibit any signs of being a danger to himself or others," Rochester police said in a statement.
He did, however, allegedly tell officers he was homeless so Gates police took him to a local homeless shelter. They also found a pair of shoes for him. Police didn't reveal which shelter he was taken to.
He was admitted to the shelter around 4:30 p.m. and left about seven hours later. Police said T.J. was seen wandering in the areas of West and Chili avenues and West Main Street downtown. Police didn't release who saw T.J. "wandering."
At 2:20 a.m. Wednesday, police are called to a residential building on East Broad Street, after he allegedly entered the locked building.
He left as police were arriving and there was no interaction. But security noticed there was damage to the locked doors, where T.J. allegedly gained entry.
He arrived at the Open Door Mission at 2:55 a.m. The shelter called him a "guest" in its initial statement Wednesday.

Police were called to the Open Door Mission by an employee around 3 a.m. after he allegedly stole knives from the shelter kitchen and was harming himself. Within minutes of the initial call, Body-worn camera footage shows officers retreating over 400 feet and repeatedly commanding him to drop the knife.

He never complied and was shot before non-lethal resources could arrive on scene. Officers had requested both a Taser and a bean bag gun that arrived too late.

Of course its simply impossible for 3 cops to deploy tasers or even a cartoon grade net would have subdued him long enough to get control. We just have to shoot him multiple times, that's the only option on the table.

Why don't they just get in their cars and lock the doors? It just doesn't make any sense. The only threat was to the cops. Not blaming the cops, they showed great restraint. Blaming the procedures. There's has to be a better way than forcing the cops to shoot a suicidal psychotic guy.

also it says he was cutting himself, that could indicate that he lost enough blood and was loosing consciousness which caused him to fall over like that.

regardless police are supposed to use firearms in a last ditch attempt to defend themselves which i always agree with, from the video i cant see what they were defending themselves from. the fat idiot was on the ground
