Hey , im a paramedic. Ive responded to a carbon monoxide death like this before. its the same as house fires, your unconscious before you know it. GCS 3/15 totally unresponsive and i assure you, the largest painful stimuli will not wake someone thats GCS 3/15. They literally wouldnt have felt a thing, i suspect there would be a short period where the air felt harsh and some coughing, but honestly once the concentration reaches so many parts per thousand they are out like a light. nature and chemistry takes care of the rest and hypoxia sets in. alot of people with hypoxia actually die in a hallucagenic state, ive seen people hypoxic or severe blood loss talking and acting as though they were on a different planet. I would find some comfort in knowing my partner wasnt aware of the situation when it happened. rather than seeing the ground come towards you and wish you hadnt. T

oh and just to reply to the last dude. Im not a mechanic, but even with the carbon monoxide reduction now forced on cars, it would simply make the process slightly slower. but its basic science, the more you press on the accelerator the more carbon monoxide your going to get. like this dude, they usually put a brick on the accelerator, so again it would be a matter of 1-2 minutes depending on the space you had to fill like that garage.

Don't know if anyone already explained this but what happens is carbon monoxide which is a product of combustion combines more readily with the hemoglobin (the oxygen carrying portion of your blood) than oxygen by something like 216 times this forms carboxyhemoglobin after the ambient room air content reaches 1% you pass out and the continuing increase of CO eventully smoothers you very peacefully
