The way I see it is this: When the robber aimed the gun at the guard everything turned to who would be the one to shoot first.
Hey you guys, real life is not like in the movies, remember the beaten to death cliché scene we see a lot where the good guy and bad guy end up pointing their guns on each other for like three to five minutes while they talk about their intentions and stuff, when someone is pointing a gun at you the worst fear at that instant is that he's going to pull the trigger so your instinct would tell you to try to shoot first if you were also pointing a gun at him.
