I think it's funny that American medical organizations deem some practices (such as useful ones) "unethical" but not others (like permanently cutting up a baby's dick without his permission). Are they saying you can execute a murderer after years on death row, but applying psychological treatment is unethical?  You make a good point about the animal training parallel because the process can't be much different from raising a child a particular way. The culling idea, as a form of artificial selection to filter out undesirable traits, just reeks of Nazi eugenics so I hate thinking about it. That ACO-style treatment sounds like it would work but would take years of rigorous study before it could be implemented on a wide-spread level. |

Right? Looked at from a logical perspective, it seems ridiculous, but the vast majority of people don't look at things from a logical perspective. Exactly. Natural selection is the best way to go. Artificial selection wouldn't work, because like you say, it reeks of Nazi eugenics. It doesn't just have the potential to be abused, and misused... it's GUARANTEED that it would be abused and misused, because it's human nature to stereotype and generalize, ie: "this pedophile was a white guy, so we should kill all white guys to ensure that something like this will never happen again." In the case of this video though, I see it as more of an example of natural selection than artificial selection. This stupid pedophile just happened to fuck with the wrong man's family, and as a result, his genes were taken out of the pool (assuming he was killed before he had the chance to reproduce, and since he liked young boys, it's a safe assumption). |

Now, THAT is the question of the CENTURY! But most pedophiles are children of pedophiles, so it comes down to this: "are they pedophiles because they, themselves were molested by their own parents, or are they pedophiles because it was genetically passed down to them?" Maybe it's a combination of "nature" AND "nurture." But then, which one carries more weight? Either way, they have a "scape-goat." "I did this because it was done to me... and it just seemed normal" or "I did this because I was BORN to do it... I can't fight my own genes." |
