Not so strange, the WTC towers used a different construction method, the walls were supporting much of the load instead of columns and beams in conventional construction methods like steel and concrete buildings like the Joelma builing in this 1974 fire or the Andraus fire two years earlier in Sao Paulo.
When the plane hit it weakened the outer shell of the WTC dooming the buildings right at the very beginning, it was just a matter of time for them to fall, unlike the Empire State which was hit by a plane in the 1945 , smaller plane obviously but still a hard blow to the building that fortunately didn't have a load bearing shell like WTC, hence it didn't fell.
