When my son was a young teen, I told him “Children don’t even register to adults out in the world. When you are 18, you are just starting to be recognized, but you know nothing, you are nothing in this world, until you learn how to be an adult.”
I never had an issue with an attitude. He’s just turned 29, a productive adult with a career, home, girlfriend, even a cat, who moved out of my home at an appropriate age.
