Shit like this happens when you are using old mortars in a bad tube. Over time the detonator starts to degrade, and it will get to the point where the initial blast of the launching charges cause the entire mortar to blow up in the tube.

I knew a special forces guy who served in Vietnam. They would booby trap mortar shells that the NVA / Vietcong used, then wait for the fun. You would hear a few good rounds from the Vietcong impact near their target, then a WHOOMP! in the distance. Good for a laugh...

Maybe that is what happens in this vid and the other Allah Snackbar mortar mishap video.
