In fact, some of the cartels are trying to act more politically by appealing to the public as being "on their side". Protecting them from the real bad guys and corrupt government. If their enterprise is converted into a "cause" it gains a certain legitamacy that goes beyond drug trafficking. In some communities, the cartels are actually considered a benevolent presence. Building parks, schools, clinics, even churches. Unfortunately, that's much more than the government has ever done for them. So who ya gonna love? It's not quite as the US media portrays it.

It does seem, however, that Mexico now leads the world in exporting grisly execution videos. This forum in particular ought to be thankful to Mexico for that at least.

You are correct my friend. My uncle lives in Matamoros, Tamaulipas and sometimes he tells us stories about Narcos going into his store to buy products. They carry their guns and wear their mask, but if you don't fuck with them, they will not do anything to you. :) Of course there are some assholes who like to stop random people and kill them.
