Re: Mechanic Killed in Freak Accident

Also.. i think that flywheel pic is horseshit. The cracks have oxidised and are not fresh breaks.
Probably right, but it could have had a crack for a long time there and then they get the rpm high enough to break it the rest of the way across. I've seen blower motors fail and when looking at them. They were full of hairline cracks that had oxidized before catastrophic failure occurred

Re: Mechanic Killed in Freak Accident

Re: Mechanic Killed in Freak Accident

Hmmm.... im not that knowledgeable in engines.... but i think flywheels have teeth around them right? I did some googling and nearest part i found that looks similar are the torque converters. i think its an old model picture i found though.

Re: Mechanic Killed in Freak Accident

That was a clutch/flywheel letting go. When it comes apart the flywheel will saw it’s way through whatever is in the way. They make SFI rated bell housings that try to contain the shrapnel and even those sometimes don’t work. The back up is to have a Kevlar blanket that wraps around the bell housing and transmission as an added precaution. Lots of drag racers have lost feet, arms and legs from that. Look up Shirley Muldowney and she almost loses her foot in a top fuel car to that happening. I don’t think you can get on a race track here in the US without at least SFI rated equipment in a manual transmission car.

Re: Mechanic Killed in Freak Accident

To me that flywheel has been taken off and hit with a hammer, no parts of the bellhousing laying around or the bolts, or the ring gear.
