Killing of Muneeb and Mughees

On August 15, 2010 two brothers and residents of Sialkot, Mughees and Muneeb Butt, were beaten to death in front of a crowd which included members of the district police. The incident was recorded in a video by a spectator which was later used by news broadcasting stations.
Background
Muneeb Butt (aged 17) and Mughees Butt (aged 15) were both residents of Sialkot. On 15 August 2010, they were accused of robbery and were killed by a mob. According to an investigative report by Director-General of Anti-corruption, Kazim Malik, police officials were present at the crime scene and encouraged the killing of the brothers.
Both crime victims, according to their acquaintances, were good-natured who had never been involved in any illegal acts. Law enforcement agencies started an investigation of the incident.

Sialkot relives after 401 days:Muneeb Mughees get justice

After a long wait of 401 days, the heirs of innocent youngsters Muneeb andMughees got a sigh of relief from an Anti terror court on Tuesday night.

It was August 15 2010 when a mob in presence of police personnel killed two Hafiz e Quran brothers while severely torturing them and later dragging the dead bodies after tying them after a vehicle.

This incident not only had resulted in great shame for Pakistan but also destroyed our peaceful image in world. Courts had taken a notice of this incident and Supreme Court had referred the case to anti terrorism court.

Many people in our media had termed this incident as death of Sialkot but it has been reversed after 401 long days of wait. We all have to wait for more than a year to get justice for the family of two innocent brothers.

The verdict of sentencing seven persons to death, six to life in prison and three to 3 years of prison each is the eventual victory of justice over atrocities.

This is also being termed as a victory of our judicial system and it indicates justice has started to roll on its own and we media and civil society would have to support independent courts for a just society in Pakistan and for the sake of democracy to take roots in Pakistan.

GUJRANWALA: The Anti-Terrorism Court, Gujranwala, awarded death sentences on four counts each to seven accused and life imprisonment to six others in the Sialkot case in which two brothers, Mughees and Muneeb, were brutally clubbed to death in the presence of the general public.

The court, headed by Judge Mushtaq Ahmed Gondal, also convicted 10 policemen, including then DPO Waqar Chohan, and acquitted five co-accused villagers, giving them the benefit of doubt.

Earlier, the lengthy arguments in the hearing concluded on Tuesday night at about 11 pm and were conducted on the jail premises guarded by heavy police security.

Out of 13 convicts, seven villagers have been awarded death sentence on four counts each, with a fine of Rs 1 lakh each. Six co-accused villagers have been awarded life imprisonment on two counts each, with a fine of Rs 50,000 each. Ten policemen, including the DPO, have been convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for three years each, as they stood by as silent onlookers at the time of the lynching.

Those awarded the death sentence include Jameel alias Jeela, Rashed Iqbal, Sarfraz, Yasir, Ali Raza alias Police and Shafiq alias Fauji. Those imprisoned for life include Qaiser, Mohsin Raza, Jamshed alias Shairu, Asghar Ali, Ateeq and Asghar. Those acquitted include Akram, Asghar, Awais, Nadeem and Shams.

The policemen convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment include then DPO Waqar Chohan, Inspector Rana Ilyas, ASI Waris, constables Nazir Hussain, Bashir Ahmed, Tariq Mahmood, Akram, Mubarak Ali, Nasir Ahmed and Yasir. Constable Nazir Hussain had, however, already died of heart failure some days before the verdict. Heavy police contingents were deployed while SSP Operations Virk was also present there to ensure security.

INP adds: Parents and other relatives of the Hafiz brothers welcomed the court's decision, explaining they had no enmity with anyone. They hailed Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry for taking the suo motu action and praised the media for projecting the incident and siding with the affected people. The government lawyers also expressed satisfaction over the verdict and described it as a message to barbaric people.

Teenage brothers, Hafiz Mugheez and Hafiz Muneeb, were mercilessly tortured to death by a mob in the presence of police officials at Buttar village in Sialkot on August 15, 2010. The lynching outraged the nation and attracted massive media attention. Later, Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry took suo motu notice of the lynching and transferred the case to the ATC.

Just in case people have skipped to the last post, It's been suggested ( perhaps proven ) that the brothers were innocent and were simply at the wrong place at the wrong time.

2 killer robbers beaten and hanged I like. The people that did it to them not so much. They paid a price for being civilized. Too bad they had a civilized response for an uncivilized act of killing people for money.
