He wasn’t. You can clearly watch him breathe very heavily starting from :55. And then at about 1:20 you can actually see his intestines being partially sucked back in by the strength of his breaths, as he’s struggling. Probably the very beginning of his agonal breathing, judging by the change in his breathing pattern.
Also, besides that, when his throat was cut, he had a strong squirt of red blood. His heart was definitely pumping.

He was most definitely alive throughout this entire video.
