that has to be one of the worst ways to go....they say its not painful but the fact that if youre concious they ask if you want your wife or parents to see you one last time and say goodbye

Nah, you wouldn't be able to think that. At best you'd be thinking that you'd die, but in a situation like that, most people ( of course, there are exceptions) are very disorientated and in shock.
