Side Note: This happened in Java Island. This is a very common occurrence here in Indonesia.

Basically, what usually happens is, these people ride what they call "Midnight Buses." They're named so because the bus, which has two alternate drivers, utilizes the nighttime to speed in order to make up time for daytime traffic driving that slows the bus down. These buses primarily crash for numerous reasons, including the fact that they were probably going over double the speed limit:

(1) The bus drivers are really crazy. No joke. They not only speed down very curvy roads, but they swerve in and out of incoming traffic, of which is primarily made up of other buses and trucks driving in the same manner.
(2) The curvy roads are more dangerous than American roads of the same grade of incline and decline because there are literally holes as big as vehicles that they must dodge.
(3) These drives are high on Redbull and coffee, don't sleep much, and sometimes drive for three to four days with no more than 3-4 hours sleep TOTAL.
(4) Most of these buses are very old, not maintained well, and outdated. Even the newer ones endure so much wear & tare that they just plain fail.
(5) The buses are packed past capacity with people and luggage. Most buses are so full, you have to stand up the whole time.

How do I know all of this? I road a Midnight Bus, once...and never, ever will again.
