Re: Derek Williams Dies in Police Car, Says He Cant Breath
That's very sad and I genuinely feel sorry for the guy, but to play the devil's advocate for a moment, the cops probably thought he was just thrashing around like many arrestees do. According to the article, this was after a foot pursuit, hence why they weren't all that concerned that he was out of breath.

Re: Derek Williams Dies in Police Car, Says He Cant Breath
He just said I can't breathe over and over I believe. (Sound was very low.) I bet if he said "sickle cell" over and over, they would have listened more than "I can't breathe". Sadly, it's not like he could have thought to said that when he's panicking. It's the cops fault, but it wasn't malicious. |

Re: Derek Williams Dies in Police Car, Says He Cant Breath
For everyone who is thinking "ZOMG WHY DIDNT THEY DO ANYTHING?" Its because people fake heart attacks and shit ALL THE TIME. Many people think that will help them get out of whatever situation so they fake it. I see this all the time with shoplifters in stores... so yeah its honestly understandable. The cop has probably heard that a million times. Cry wolf to many times then when it actually happens no one will come...unfortunately it was other people that pushed the cop past the "cry wolf" limit. |

Re: Derek Williams Dies in Police Car, Says He Cant Breath
I've watched so many videos on here and this one might be one of the saddest ones ive seen. It doesn't have any gore but just the fact that the guy was with people who are supposed to "protect and serve" and was just ignored for almost ten minutes is crazy! I would have %100 preferred to be shot to death than go through that.

wait what? you sure he did something to piss them off to not believe him? any particular reason you have this train of thought? last i checked the side of a police car says "to protect and serve" not "ignore and let die" |

Re: Derek Williams Dies in Police Car, Says He Cant Breath
I am going to be the devil's advocate for a moment. This man's civil rights were violated in several different ways, and the officers should in fact be accountable for negligent manslaughter, or voluntary manslaughter. At this point in an arrest, he is only a SUSPECT. He has not in any way, been afforded due process of a trial, and therefore has not been convicted of anything, and certainly nothing that carries a death sentence. It does not matter one bean if a thousand other people faked the exact same thing that very night. The very moment these officers took custody of this suspect, in handcuffs and locked in their vehicle, they absolutely had a duty to protect his life, and provide medical treatment which included alerting medics. I'm willing to go even one step further. Even after it was obvious the man was in need of immediate medical treatment, no CPR or any other reasonable effort was made to save his life, and no danger was being presented to the officers. Let's imagine for a moment this was a 7 year old white girl. Do you think the officers would have denied CPR or any life saving emergency treatment? All police officers that I know of, or ever heard of, has been trained in CPR. Are they obligated to perform CPR wouldn't even be a question if they had alerted medics promptly when they became aware of a life threatening condition experienced by a human being in their complete custody. At what point in our lives did the oath to protect and serve transform into arrest and harass? Anyone who wants to defend the officers, let's hear your argument. It will be entertaining.
