I think the agonal breathing started toward the very end when you just heard a burst followed by increasing intervals of silence. Prior to the final minutes, I believe that was just his brain stem functioning on automatic pilot. His cerebral cortex stopped functioning almost immediately as it was directly in the line of fire. Any part of the cortex that was physically spared still ceased to function almost immediately due to the severe loss of blood.
