I think there's only one explanation to that. Most places in china, Average to poor people there have their toilets drains through the public drainage system. those cases must have concentrated build up of methane gas when the firecrackers were applied. Their sewers should have breathing pipes overhead when they use it for toilet sewers too.

not intentional and probably ignorant of the fact that human and animal excrement will produce highly volatile gasses when left too long in enclosures.

They have some pretty powerful pyrotechnics over there that's not legal in the U.S. Some of the firecrackers over there practically are the equivalent of dynamite in that regard.
