Normally when they botch a hanging, or when you survive, you are supposed to be pardoned after the first.

I think that is a myth, I have never heard anyone pardoned because of a botched execution. Not even to have it commuted.

Sure, it is a common miscalculation to prepare a rope 3x longer then necessary, not everyone have the sharp eye for small details like that.
