Actually, normal (non-medical) maggots may start out on an open wound or even an unclean skin surface and continue eating into the healthy flesh. It's called fly strike with livestock and there's stuff you put on such a wound available at farm supplies. Oh yeah, I've treated my own. They crawl in and out (just like the song) and will drill all the way into the body cavity and come out somewhere else. No, they're happy to eat whatever is available.
