yeah the problem with "pulling it out" is that it could be puncturing an artery or going through major nerves or muscles and tendons...The can not put the pole and him through an MRI machine to see about arteries and such, so they had to do the surgery

Never remove an impaled object. If it's fixed to something solid, it needs to be cut loose. Pack dressings on both side to stabalize and transport.

Wow, looks like a pretty emprobable injury, the guy probably thought it would be empossible to survive, and emplored the doctors to save him. They must have had to emprovise some empromptu methods, since you don't get injuries like that every day. It's empressive that they saved him.
