Re: Ingrown Toenail Before and After Pics

painful
So what's your cause ?

Tight-fitting shoes or high heels cause the toes to be compressed together and pressure the nail to grow abnormally.

Improper trimming of toenails can cause the corners of the nail to dig into the skin. Nails should be trimmed straight across, not rounded.

Disorders such as fungal infections of the nail can cause a thickened or widened toenail to develop.

Either an acute injury near the nail or anything that causes the nail to be damaged repetitively (such as playing soccer) can also cause an ingrown nail.

If a member of your family has an ingrown toenail, then you are more likely to develop one, too. Some people's nails are normally more rounded than others or the underlying bone can be more "upturned," which increases the chance of developing ingrown nails.

I don't know if it had anything to do with my diabetes or not, but I used to get ingrown toenails (big toes only) all the time in middle school. Finally, they permanently removed them. To this day, those nails won't grow all the way.

Re: Ingrown Toenail Before and After Pics

Some of the vids I've seen of how the doctors surgically treat this look downright barbaric. yours looks like it wasn't TOO bad compared to some of what I've viewed.. (Doc just goes in and cuts large hunks of flesh out. Seemed like they were overdoing it ..lol)

As for the diabetic fear with this?
I could see where NurseBettie would be concerned.
The healing after the procedure (or just the the ingrown nail itself.)
Diabetics have problems with healing in the legs/feet and are very prone to infections of the foot/leg due to poor circulation and nerve damage caused by diabetes. (Namely peripheral artery disease and peripheral neuropathy.)

Not uncommon for someone with diabetes to require an amputation to the foot/leg, and what's sad is that something as simple as someone who is diabetic stubbing their toe or even getting a small wound on their foot/lower leg, like stepping on a small staple etc. to cause these kinds of complications.

There are a lot of vids/pics in this section of DR that document diabetic foot problems thoroughly..

The thing that would worry me the most I think if I were to inherit the disease from my family wouldn't be not being allowed to consume sugar. Or having to inject myself with insulin.
It would be the limb/nerve problems and fear of losing a limb.

As for your toe? May not be as bad as some of the procedures I've seen in the past..
But still doesn't look pleasant. Hope it heals up and you don't need another procedure. Does look sore.

Re: Ingrown Toenail Before and After Pics

Fuzzy toes!

Many years ago I accidentally ripped off my big toe nail after it got caught on the cuff of my jeans, as I was pulling them on. *OUCH*

Every so often that same nail just gets loose and falls off.

It's such a creepy feeling to touch the skin under where the nail should be.

Re: Ingrown Toenail Before and After Pics

Just had this done 2 weeks ago, I watched the whole procedure, and without it being numb it would have been brutally painful
