This was around March or April of 2001, taken on an FFG from the USS Constellation Battle Group. As I understand it, the guy on the deck was the flight deck coordinator. Some people said this could have been from approaching the helo as it decoupled it's blades. I worked on HH-60s for a few years but ours didn't have the folding rotor head. Regardless, the blades never "decouple" since they are driven directly from the transmission/engine output shafts. What may have happened is the crew applied the rotor brake. That will make the blades droop rapidly and could have caught the poor guy off guard. Either way, the dept of the Navy sent our a very terse email about the redistribution of graphic (and restricted access) pictures like these. I wouldn't want to be the next guy caught leaking accident investigation pics, the brigg is a shitty place to be! |
