Had lightning struck the girls directly there would have been massive damage du to the high current. In this case the main strike would have been to the tree which would have taken the majority on the current. Then a side flash struck the girls, disrupting their hearts. The second photo shows the entry of the side flash. This is typical of lightning as people are usually not high enough to attract a direct strike. Lightning is very dangerous and the only safe spot is indoors during a storm. There are usually more lightning strikes on the trailing edge of a storm and the rule of thumb is stay inside for 30 minutes after the last thunder. |
