To me it looks more like torture/murder. While the right side of the face looks skinned look at the left cheek. Looks cleanly sliced to the ear like a smiley.

As far as the hand and arm go.....that's just probably where they started

Some folks just don't know when to back off and this happens. From the carvings it looks as if this guy reeeeeeally pissed somebody off and the somebody wanted him to know how pissed before he died..I highly recommend this form of retribution!!
