As has been stated above, the bullet went through the largely hollow sinus cavities and exited. This still results in a low survival rate due to rapid blood loss; someone must have been very close to call medical help.

Now he really has something to be depressed about - a screwed up face. That on top of the failure he feels for not getting the job done probably will ensure he does it right next time!
