The Very First Officer Involved Shooting Caught On Dash Cam (1987)

Georgia State Trooper Benjy Hodges, pulls over a motorist who meets various criteria of being a potential drug
runner, one of which is the fact that he is driving a rented car.
Trooper Hodges asks the driver to step to the rear of the vehicle and begins to question him, at which time
he learns that the motorist is not the registered renter. Even more unusual, the driver doesn’ t seem to
know who is (the registered driver).
Then, upon speaking with the passenger, Hodges’ notes that the stories he has been told are ambiguous
and conflicting. He asks the motorist to sign a consent form to search the vehicle, then proceeds to radio
for back up.
While waiting for back up to arrive, Hodges utilizes various stalling tactics in an effort to keep the
situation under control.
When the back-up officer, a small-town constable, arrives, Hodges proceeds to the passenger side and
asks the passenger to exit the vehicle. The passenger, however, has his hand between the seat and the
door and states he has a gun in his hand. Hodges pulls out his service weapon and orders the passenger to
drop the gun.
After repeated loud, verbal commands to relinquish the gun, the motorist places it on the dashboard, but
when Hodges leans in to retrieve it, the passenger also reaches for it. Hodges fires once, striking the
passenger in the side.
Meantime, during the entire course of Hodge’ s efforts to get the passenger to give up the gun, the backup
officer applies questionable tactics in containing the driver. This includes exposing his weapon to the
driver; and not immediately handcuffing the driver; and not coming to Hodges’ assistance.

Watch how many times the suspect that is being "contained" by the backup officer looks at his gun and takes his right hand off the hood. You can tell he wants to try but at the same time you can see it all over his face that if he misses his gun he would get shot by both officers and his friend would as well

Should have been cuffed right away

Very historic video

Back-up cop really didn't know what to do but when a gun is in the game always cuff others involved so you van pay full attention and help the other cop.

Of the 100s of dash cam shootings that I have that is BY FAR the best response of all time

Yeah, that fat cop was completely ill-equipped to handle the situation.

Re: The Very First Officer Involved Shooting Caught On Dash Cam (1987)

So the suspect being "contained" at at the front of the cop car was wanting to take the other officers gun? Really?

He just looked nervous as all get out to me. But that's my own opinion. Because if that was me (for some odd reason, I was running drugs for someone) I'd be nervous, shaking like a leaf, and wondering wtf my "friend" is doing. About to get our asses killed.

No doubt he kept looking back at his friend to watch what was happening

But watch the suspect when the back up cop gets on the radio

The suspect looks at his gun the whole time he is calling dispatch and kind of lets his right hand just flop around (I think to test if the cop would notice) then he is told both hands on the hood

The back up cop keeps patting him down when he drops his right hand thinking he may have a weapon and thats why he keeps taking his hand off, not even considering that his service revolver is just sitting there waiting to be taken

Like I said the suspect THINKS about trying to take his gun, but at the same time you can see he is not a complete idiot and didnt want to die

I cant read the suspects mind but his actions have "Well I might have a chance....maybe 10% chance that I even get the gun and a 5% chance I can kill him and a .0000000001% chance that I can then flip around and shoot the other cop before he shoots me.....ummmmmmmmm Prison for drug running here I come" written all over his face
