High Speed Chase Results in Perp Fatality
JAMES ISLAND, S.C. - The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly wreck that occurred just before the stroke of midnight. Officials say the wreck happened on Camp Road near Fort Johnson Road. A spokesperson for the SC Highway Patrol says two people were killed when a 2004 Chevy Impala ran off the road and hit a tree around 11:55 p.m. Monday. The driver and the passenger were killed. Authorities say neither of the victims had a seatbelt on at the time of the crash. They have been identified as 35-year-old Toland Gathers and 34-year-old Shahied Ladson, both from Charleston. Both men died from blunt force trauma. Officials with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office say the fatal crash was a result of a high speed chase. At approximately 11:52 p.m., according to a press release issued Wednesday afternoon, a Charleston County sheriff's deputy observed the 2004 Chevy Impala exiting the Blue Water gas station at 772 Folly Road. The driver, according to officials, crossed all lanes of travel on Folly Road into the right lane; proceeded onto Folly road; made a right onto Camp Road and then pulled into a Walgreen's parking lot. The driver then reportedly exited the parking lot again, crossing all traffic lanes traveling to the intersection of Folly Road and Camp Road. As the driver made a right turn onto Camp Road, the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop for the traffic violations. That's when officials say the driver accelerated down Camp Road. As the deputy continued to pursue the vehicle, officials say the vehicle entered into a curve on Camp Road at the intersection of Dill's Bluff Road, over-corrected and struck a tree. Inside the vehicle, deputies say they found 7.5 grams of white powder, which field tested presumptive for cocaine in the vehicle; along with a second baggie of an off white rock like substance which tested presumptive for cocaine base. Investigators say unknown quantities of drugs were also found on the deceased at the hospital. The Charleston County Sheriff's Office, the Charleston County Coroner's Office and the South Carolina MAIT Team continue to investigate the accident. ![]() |

Re: High Speed Chase Results in Perp Fatality
i dont feel bad for these idiots but i do think police should have terminated the pursuit after the damn idiot was weaving into and out of oncoming traffic. In my part of the country if the pursuit is high speed and at risk to the public they will quit pursuing. afterall he already had the dudes tag number, he wouldve caught them later or the next day |

Re: High Speed Chase Results in Perp Fatality
In Kansas City there are pursuit laws that regulate a pursuit: (1) Only pursue certain felonies such as murder, rape, robbery, kidnapping, and such serious crimes where it is apparent the subject is a danger to society. (2) Do not pursue on traffic charges only. (3) Do not pursue stolen cars. (4) Attempt to disable drivers under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol as soon as safely possible. (5) Must have sergeant's permission to start/continue chase once speeds go over a certain amount of the posted limit. With that said, I think it was reckless to chase and endanger people over that. |
