Unfortunately, this is the mindset of the NYPD these days.. Do as little as possible and call it Public Safety.

If there's no complaining victim the investigation is useless in a court of law, even if they found the guy.

It's possible they got the video owner's number and planned on calling for the evidence if and when someone came forward to complain. They probably should just have just taken it anyway though.

Police on Friday released a surveillance video of an attempted rape last month in Brooklyn.
A neighbor’s security camera caught the graphic sights and sounds of an attempted rape in Park Slope on March 20 around 11:30 p.m.

A woman can be heard screaming, “Get off me,” as a man grabs her.

Neighbors on 16th Street between 4th and 5th avenues say they were woken up by the 24-year-old victim’s blood-curdling screams as she fought to get away from her attacker and pleaded for help.
"All of sudden, there's a loud, piercing scream outside, that just kept going,” said Donald Harrington, a Park Slope resident. “I jumped up right away, and looked out window and saw a guy was holding a woman across the street and she was struggling, trying to get away, so I yelled out the window. And then she finally broke free, started running up the street. I came running out. By the time I got out here, the guy had crossed the street and had started running up the block."

Eventually the man whose security camera captured the footage came outside scaring the attacker away. Neighbors say the police came but did not look at the tape.

"They should have taken down his name or looked at the tape," Harrington said.
Neighbors say it wasn't until the tape was given to the media a month after the attack that the police got more involved.

Police say they're investigating.
