This happened all the time, a white woman saying a black man assaulted her. To kill a mockingbird could be based on all of the times it happened.

I did a quick google search and found a black man named Walter Lett was falsely accused of raping a white woman. And the "Scottsboro Boys" case was also an influence, but she had in mind something less sensational for the book.

So quick on the lynching instead of investigating it thoroughly... In my opinion, the women who falsely accuse someone should be charged and then lynched themselves... Betcha that would stop the false accusations real quick
