Re: Red Haired | Human Race Education
Yep, my mom is from Allen Park, dad is from Melvindale. Suburbs of Detroit. I have quite a bit of family there. I also lived in Washington D.C. which is predominantly black, with no problems at all. |

Re: Red Haired | Human Race Education
LOVE the panorama structive taht's awesome. I remember being "friends" with a girl that we'd pick on a lot... it wasn't BECAUSE she was redheaded, but she was kindof a dork so we used her red hair as something to make fun of. I also had another friend with red hair and brown eyes, she was GORGEOUS. I'm wondering HOW they figured out the pain thing, that they feel it differently. hehe, I don't think any racist black people feel differently about red haired white people and brown or blonde haired white ppl. I've heard that there is a lot of racial strife in Detroit tho- most of the white ppl are upper class and the blacks are mostly in poverty. |

Re: Red Haired | Human Race Education
Most people of any race in Detroit are middle-class at best. The crumble of the auto industry and the liberal way the city has been run for years has contributed to the socio-economic decline of the whole city. Racism in the D has always been bad and it doesn't have a whole lot to do with income levels.

Re: Red Haired | Human Race Education
I remember we had one red haired boy in the school, and when we drove in the school bus, everybody was kidding him. That was so cruel, we (yeah, I was part of them) sang a song for him, "Captain Yellow Teeth, he came from far away and brang the yellow teeth". That was not nice, but he was even laughing about that as well! He had fire red hair, totally white skin, freckels everywhere and the only thing that was not white, that were his yellow teeth. But I bet the teeth were normal, only his skin was so pale that the teeth appeared to be yellow.

Re: Red Haired | Human Race Education
Yeeeaaah, 85% black. So, statistically, I suppose you're right. But there are very wealthy blacks there, as well as very poor whites. Just like every other large American city. The mayor is black, the city council? all black. Police chief, yep, black. Head of the fire dept? He's black too. Maybe they should help their city out.?? Oh attorney Theresa Guyser is Superintendant of Schools, she's also black. |

Re: Red Haired | Human Race Education
I don't think they are necessarily looked down upon as regarded with suspicion. Particularly the females. Red haired, green eyed people are thought to be descended from the Tuatha De Danaan, an ancient Irish people of mythical/divine origin who were believed to possess magical powers or 'sidhes'. These beliefs have made a genetic imprint on the collective subconcious and to this day, redheads can inexplicably scare the shit out of people.
