...
unless it is radical muslims. it is almost if not completely impossible to have any respect for them and their belies when your decapitated head is sitting on your chest.
I agree with everything you said, but this part made me burst out laughing!

Re: I Know I Am Stirring Up a Hornet's Nest Here

I dont believe in anything for several reasons. My first is ask anybody that is a follower (not hardcore but decent) to stand back for a second and look at what is going on. I know this girl that is such a die hard that she will not date anybody unless she expect them to purpose to her. She is 31 and has yet to get a single date, she hasn't been kissed and goes to church almost daily. She is kind of hardcore but just an example...

Two: any sort of "challenge" to any form of god has a reason why nothing will happen. I have made a point to many very religious people.. standing in the street during a storm asking to be hit by lightning. Well its not my ghost typing this...

Three: if people want to pick and choose what to follow out of the bible, then so be it but when something that is written in it is brought up that actually makes them a "bad" christian, why is it still alright they can pick and choose but others cant?

Four: ALL religions believe they are right

Five: I dont know the exact number the bible said how old the earth is (I dont even think it does but it hints)... That has been blown away several times on several different proven scientific methods.

Six: This one really gets me mad. It seems people can believe a "god" has always been there and he has created "Everything". But wait a minute, something had to "create" him... Or with that same idea of something always being there - the universe has more proof and much more information supporting its much older than what people believe "god" could be.

Seven: Why are there so many different forms of the bible? One says one thing and another says something different.. One has to be wrong..

Eight: The church, in the 18 and 1900's, was caught changing their teachings to make them more "right"

Any religion anybody just needs to stand back and realize its a theory. If it was the truth it would be called history. There is absolutely NO evidence any of this really happened. In my opinion it was a story some person made up and wrote about and people took it seriously.

Re: I Know I Am Stirring Up a Hornet's Nest Here

Many things come into question in our fast paced world. The Bible gives us some pretty good information as to social function and one following that protocol will be loved and respected. I know people that are spiritual or follow the word (Really) would promote a safer world. It's hard to believe that such a religion has as much impact today as in yesterday's world so maybe there is merit. With the end product being eternal damnation I would probably elect taking Jesus as my Savior!!....sigh

Point Six has a serious flaw. If a person believes that man just evolved from amino acids or mud then how can he believe that "God" had to be created or designed? So, the existence of a Diety would need to have a designer but man just arrises out of the muck as a microbe and evolves into a self aware life form. That's not very plausible.

Point seven reveals a lack of education on scriptures. I, of course, will not make even the least attempt to bore readers with the details of 4000 years on this page. I'm sure any serious person can google all he wants on the topic.

Point eight opens more questions. What church? The Catholic? Which catholic church? Roman, Orthodox, Coptic? Or protestant and which one of those? And what changes were made or what were those changes based on. BTW, I have little patience with any Christian sect so don't count me as a defender of Christianity.

Re: I Know I Am Stirring Up a Hornet's Nest Here

If it works for you, good.

Personally:

"Consider the impasse of a one God universe.
He is all-knowing and all-powerful.
He can't go anywhere since He already is everywhere.
He can't do anything since the act of doing presupposes opposition.
His universe is irrevocably thermodynamic having no friction by definition. So, He has to create friction: War, Fear, Sickness, Death,
To keep his dying show on the road.

Sooner or later, "Look boss we don't have enough energy left to fry an elderly woman in a flea bag hotel fire."

"Well, we'll have to start faking it."

Joe looks after him sourly and mixes a bicarbonate of soda. "Sure, start faking it. Sure, and leave the details to Joe."

Now look, from a real disaster you get a pig of energy: Sacrifice, Heroism, Grief, Separation, Fear and Violent Death, and remember one violent death yields more energy than a cancer ward.
So, from a energy surplus you can underwrite the next one.
So, from a energy surplus you can underwrite the next one.
But if the first one's a fake, you can't underwrite a shithouse!
Try to explain to God Almighty where His one God universe is going.
The asshole doesn't know what buttons to push or what happens when you push them! Abandon ship, god damn it every man for himself!

Recollect Pope John XXIII saying, "Like a little soldier, I stand at attention in the presence of my captain." The old army game from here to eternity: Get there firstest with the brownest nose."

I couldn't put it better myself.

Don't forget that he's (God) terrible with money. You are always having to put cash in the offering...

Re: I Know I Am Stirring Up a Hornet's Nest Here

Interesting,
regarding the bible code, as someone who has major in mathematics, i can tell you right away, that whatever manipulation done in it to come up with results serving their current purpose is not a hard thing to do... it CAN be done with other books... i don't know why everyone are so fixed on moby dick of all things...
try doing it on 200 books, 400-500 pages each, you would be surprised, some may even work better in delivering results than the bible is.

I am an atheist, i was born into a traditional family with all the religion around me... my phylosophy on the subject is very simple:
look around you, see all the suffering, death, hardship, with the only shred of mercy or compassion coming from humans themselves... no supreme being is there to help or intervene.
free will you say?
an omnipotent being knows everything, controls everything, nothing is done without his will or foresight into the future on what is about to happen...
that being said,
adam and even... why create the tree? why give them the choice? and considering god is supposed to be omnipotent, he already knew they will eat the apple, more than that... it must be under his own will to begin with.
so why the games? why the futile tests?
he created us didnt he? then every flaw, surrender to temptations, our predicted actions and reactions, are all his design...
why design humans capable of sin and give them the option to sin? when its all your design as a god it seems more and more like some twisted game, unfitting to what you would call a supreme being...

so we sinned because he made us capable of doing it, he placed the tree with the apples KNOWING we will sin (as he knows all)...
then we need to reproduce to populate the earth? why dont he populate the earth?
what is so supreme about a being that created the concept of sin in the first place? why even begin introducing evil and sin into existence if you can chose not to?

in light of these (as i see them) cruel and far from supreme acts,
i personally concluded the following:

1. god does not exist... then it all makes sense.
2. god does exist, but he is so flawed, and somewhat evil in his conduct, that he is not even worth worshiping...

so from my point of view, i rather accept that god doesn't exist, then believe we were all started but some demented supreme being who chose to toy with us into existence.
