Woman Convicted of Trying to Decapitate, Then Knock Out Husband

*Here is the supposed story. I hadn't heard about this case that I can recall, but, I'll tell you my thoughts after the article.*

EVERETT, WA (AP) — A Washington State woman accused of trying to decapitate her sleeping husband with an electric saw was convicted Thursday of attempted murder.

Jurors needed only about three hours to reach a verdict in the trial of Renee Bishop-McKean of Everett. They also convicted the 44-year-old woman of first-degree assault for hitting the man in the head with a hatchet and mallet.

The jury was told the noise of the saw woke the victim last Oct. 14 and he fought his wife off. He was treated for cuts and scrapes.

Bishop-McKean told police an attacker must have entered the home through an open window, found the saw and attacked her husband. Deputy Prosecutor Paul Stern noted the window was locked so it would only open a few inches. He called the woman's theory the, "Tinkerbell did this", defense.

The woman, who did not testify, shook her head in disagreement when the verdicts were announced.

Bishop-McKean faces at least 15 years in prison at sentencing set for Oct. 4.

The couple had been living apart but jurors were told the woman invited her husband over and told him to sleep on a mattress that she had wrapped in plastic, then covered with normal sheets.

Police found evidence that Bishop-McKean had purchased the saw, hatchet and mallet shortly before the attack and stockpiled bleach and a supply of large garbage bags.

"You don't need to be concerned about the, 'why,'" Stern said in closing arguments Thursday. "You care about the, 'who.'"

Defense lawyer Ken Lee said prosecutors couldn't explain what happened or prove that his client was responsible. He offered three theories, including the mysterious intruder scenario suggested by Bishop-McKean.

Lee also suggested the victim might have hurt himself and blamed his wife. The defense lawyer acknowledged that option was, "right out of Alfred Hitchcock."

Finally, Lee said the only other possibility was that Bishop-McKean was responsible for the attack but if so, the evidence suggests, "a very half-hearted attempt" to kill.

The Daily Herald of Everett reports that tests on the tools showed DNA from both Bishop-McKean and her husband, with trace amounts from someone else. Jurors were told the trace amount likely came from someone who handled the saw at the store before its purchase.

In addition one of them tried to feed the children anti-freeze.

*My theory is they wanted to kill the children, something went wrong and they came up with the intruder theory. Granted, she looks like a wacko!*

A Washington state woman accused of trying to decapitate her sleeping husband with an electric saw was convicted Thursday of attempted murder.

Jurors needed only about three hours to reach a verdict in the trial of Renee Bishop-McKean of Everett. They also convicted the 44-year-old woman of first-degree assault for hitting the man in the head with a hatchet and mallet.

She had denied she intended to kill her husband, even though she lined their bedroom with plastic sheets, bleach, and garbage bags in the hours before she was found standing over him as he slept holding a power saw.

Accused: Renee Bishop-McKean, 44, said that she was chasing an intruder but she was found holding a chainsaw just inches from her husband's neck and had prepared the house for a massive clean up

The harrowing attack occurred on October 14, 2011 in the family's Everett, Washington home, and it was only stopped when police heard screaming and responded to the scene.

In spite of her excuse that she saw an intruder escape through the couple's daughter's window, her husband was screaming when they arrived.

'It was you, it was you! You tried to cut my head off. You're going to jail!' Herald Net reports him saying.

Even though he was able to escape the slice of the blade, the fight continued as she had laid out a hatchet and a mallet in the kitchen and she went on to attack him with those when the saw failed.

The husband, 37, has not been publicly identified in an effort to protect the couple's children. Oops! His name is Brett Bishop.

Victim: The husband (pictured in court) has not been named in hopes of protecting the children

According to local station KOMO News' coverage of the trial, there were several warning signs that something was awry that night, but none could have predicted that Bishop-McKean, 44, would try to decapitate her husband.

The couple had recently separated, and the night of the attack was the first evening that the husband had returned home- at her request.

When he pulled up to the house, Bishop-McKean told him to park down the street and not in front of the home.

Reports after the incident assert that she had laid sheets over the back seat and cargo area of the family Jeep Cherokee. Presumably for the clean up, she had bought multiple roasting pans, bleach, and garbage bags.

The husband confirmed to police that he had recently bought a box of large white garbage bags so he didn't understand why she had two additional bags of large black garbage bags under the sink.

The same confusion came from the presence of the eight roasting pans that were in the kitchen, because normally they just kept one in the house for Thanksgiving dinner.

He also found several gallons of bleach under the kitchen sink, bathroom sink, and on top of the refrigerator, which was much more than the single bottle they normally kept in the home.
KOMO News says that the husband told police that when he got into bed that evening, he heard a 'crinkle noise' which she told him was an extra blanket. Really it was the plastic sheets she used to line the bed.

Inches from death: The husband woke up after hearing the sound of the Sawzell reciprocating saw (like this one)

He woke up to the noise of the Sawzall blade just inches away from the neck, and she convinced him that she had heard an intruder in the home.

Police later checked the window in the daughter's room which Bishop-McKean claimed was the escape route for the intruder, but they deemed that it was not viable since there is a childproof lock on the window and there were no footprints at the scene.

Initial reports say that he then checked the house for the supposed intruder, she came after him with the hatchet and mallet that were in the kitchen.

During his testimony on Tuesday, he described the attack as being more aggressive.

Unusual: When the husband returned home (pictured) on the night of the attack, they were in the middle of a trial separation and she told him to park down the street

Testimony: The husband said in court that he stopped her from using the chainsaw by taking out the battery
'Renee came at me in the kitchen with the Sawzall raised up, we had a struggle over it. She kept pulling the trigger to make it run, so I reached out and pulled the battery out of it,' he told the court.

Amid the struggle with the various weapons, the husband sustained cuts and scrapes on his arms, one of which required seven stitches.

Bishop-McKean was found guilty of first degree attempted murder and domestic violence assault.

She faces at least 15 years in prison at sentencing set for October 4.

The woman, who did not testify, shook her head in disagreement when the verdicts were announced.

The reason for the separation that prompted the attack has never been publicly stated, but Bishop-McKean continues to refuse her husband's request for a divorce.

Wow. That crazy bitch plotted that out. She should be charged with attempted murder and spend a long time in prison. Using an electric saw to cut your spouse's head off? That is sick!

she just wanted to scare him. if she really wanted him dead she would have planned better. murder is easy, hiding the evidence is tricky.
