Not just any dog. A colonel! I honestly wonder if they heard his name and thought that was his rank.

They actually do carry "rank." I'm pretty sure they'd name the dog something other than "Colonel" due to that being a common word. They don't need five guys shouting "Hey Colonel Bunghole" and the dog hearing "Colonel" and possibly reacting.

Actually, this dog appears to belong to a SOF group and I wouldn't be surprised if they will put some kind of mission together to retrieve him. The handler alone is probably fuming and ready to go. These dogs aren't seen as equipment by their team, they are seen as valuable team members.

I know they carry rank. I just did some digging and found that the K9 does indeed carry the rank of Colonel. Also, it appears to either be a British military k9 or a US one attached to a British special forces. They're not being exactly clear on it..
Feel bad for the dog and the handler

It's all good.
And I know what you mean, the look in his eyes in that picture. He's scared and confused, bewildered.

Re: US Military Canine 'in Afghan Taliban Custody'

The historian William Montgomery Watt states that Muhammad's kindness to animals was remarkable given the social context of his upbringing. He cites an instance of Muhammed, while traveling with his army to Mecca in 630 CE, posting sentries to ensure that a female dog and her newborn puppies were not disturbed. On the other hand, in a tradition found in the Sunni hadith book al-Muwatta, Muhammad is reported as saying that the company of dogs voids a portion of a Muslim’s good deeds

According to a Sunni narration classified as authentic by Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, black dogs are a manifestation of evil in animal form. Another Sunni tradition attributed to Muhammad commands Muslims not to trade or deal in dogs. The Hanafi school, however – the largest school of ritual law in Sunni Islam – permits dog trading.

One story relates that Muhammad, having seen a prostitute give a thirsty dog some water from a nearby well, told her that her deed had earned her God's forgiveness

The majority of Muslim jurists consider dogs to be ritually unclean (najis) and some Muslims point to hadith that state that dogs should be killed. Beyond ritual, however, individual fatāwā ("rulings") have indicated that dogs be treated kindly or otherwise released and earlier Islamic literature often portrayed dogs as symbols of highly-esteemed virtues such as self-sacrifice and loyalty, which, in the hands of despotic and unjust rulers, become oppressive instruments.

This dog will be killed by a group of fearless freedom fighters....What a victory
