*Update* 'Strange Creature' Found in Tin of Tuna is Sent to Lab for Tests

This story just hit the US. Hopefully, it is not posted yet. I think I'll just have a peanut butter sandwich with some strawberry Polaner all fruit. ;)

Yoy would expect to find something fishy in a can of tuna – but this pair of tiny black eyes were completely, 'out of plaice'.

Zoe Butler, of Hawthorn Crescent in Arnold, opened a can of Princes tuna and spotted a creature staring at her.

The mother of two, aged 28, has complained to the company and is keeping the dead creature, (pictured below), in the tin while she waits for a reply.

Princes has apologised and has said it is investigating.

Mrs Butler said the can of tuna chunks preserved in spring water was part of a multi-pack bought from Asda in Front Street, Arnold.

She said,"I opened the top of the lid and saw a purply thing, a gut sack or intestine – then I turned it round and pushed it with a fork and saw it looking back at me.

"It's got like a spiny tail along the bottom – it's quite grim.

"I dropped the fork, jumped back, screamed a bit and shouted for my nan to come and have a look."

Mrs Butler, who works as a clerical officer, sent photos of the fishy find to Princes.

She added, "I haven't shown it to the kids because they might get put off eating tuna.

"I just want to find out what it is and to make sure it doesn't happen to somebody else.

"I didn't set out to get compensation and I don't a want lifetime's supply of tuna!"

Zoe's grandmother Susan Goddard, 69, said, "It's a little red and has eyes, bright black, looking at you. We did manage to ascertain that it was dead."

Dr Hany Elsheikha, associate professor of veterinary parasitology at the University of Nottingham, said it could be some form of juvenile crab.

He said, "All I can see from the picture is a body and the eyes are very prominent. The legs have been chopped off during the process."

A spokesman for Princes said, "We were contacted by Mrs Butler and immediately responded to apologise. We are arranging for her to send us the product so that we can look into this matter fully."

An Asda spokeswoman said they were awaiting the outcome of the investigation.

*The Gross Creature Found in a Mom’s Can of Tuna Has Been Identified!

February 5, 2015

I’m not sure if this woman should be excited to have discovered alien life or horrified that she was about to feed it to her children, but the odds of her buying canned tuna again are probably slim to none.

Zoe Butler was preparing a meal for her kids when she saw something unusual in the can of Princes Tuna. What on Earth is this thing?

Obviously, she freaked out and contacted the company to let them know there are mutant water slug babies living in their product. Princes apologized and says they’re investigating how the creatures from Prometheus got into their food.

Days later the story got even more disgusting. Thanks to a professional at London’s Natural History Museum, the mystery was solved.

It turns out the little creature was actually a parasitic crustacean that lives in the mouths of fish. Cymothoa exigua, more commonly known as the, “tongue-eating louse.”

If that’s not disgusting enough, the louse actually doesn’t eat any tongues, but instead sucks the blood out of it’s hosts tongue until the tongue atrophies and dies. It then attaches itself to the fish’s tongue stub and, “replaces,” the tongue altogether.

The good news here is that the louse doesn’t actually cause any real harm to its host. It just skims a little food off the top of every meal and, as long as the fish gets enough food, they live happily ever after!

That doesn’t mean you want to find it in your can of tuna though.

Thank you, gatagato, for the additional information!

Thanks also to Darkest Angel for the Playboy link! ;)

According to Stuart Hine, Identification and Advisory Service manager, from the Natural History Museum, in London, it's the head of a Cymothoa_exigua (or similar), a tongue-eating parasite which associates with small fish that tuna eat.

Mystery tuna creature is tongue-eating parasite, says expert

he tiny tuna monster has set Twitter abuzz with explanations. The search for answers has been dubbed #tunagate.
But the Natural History Museum said that the head probably belonged to a Cymothoa exigua, or tongue-eating louse. The parasite lives inside a fish, entering through its gills and attaching itself to its host’s tongue.
Stuart Hine, Identification and Advisory Service manager, from the Natural History Museum, in London, said: “‘From what I can see I would support the head of a Tongue-eating louse, Cymothoa exigua, or similar.

“I think these are associates of smaller fish than Tuna and fish that tuna eat.
“We could undoubtedly say more if presented with the specimen .’
Mrs Butler, 28, bought the can of tuna from an Asda in Arnold, a suburb of Nottingham.
"I opened the top of the lid and saw a purply thing, a gut sack or intestine – then I turned it round and pushed it with a fork and saw it looking back at me,” she told the Nottingham Post.

"I just want to find out what it is and to make sure it doesn't happen to somebody else.

The overwhelming majority of incidents like these turn out to be fabrications and blackmail shakedowns.

No, it looks real to me. I've seen these creatures in photographs. My dad used to find them in the mouths of fish he caught.

In the processing plant, sometimes parts of the tuna(or other animal) end up in the cans that shouldn't be there. One time, I had a sardine with its head still partially attached.

These parasitic creatures are a natural part of the environment. It is possible for them to end up in your canned fish. No different than finding an insect or rodent in other pre processed/packaged foods.

Sometimes it happens

The creature is real, but the likelihood is that a scammer/shakedown artist put it in the can.

Plus, these creatures are found in a tuna's mouth.

I have never heard of other parts of a tuna's mouth teeth, jaw, eyes, etc. being found in a can of tuna before.

Anything is possible, I suppose.

For instance, for all you know, I may be Elvis Presley, but...

I wouldn't suggest looking at regulations for processed and canned foods and what they are allowed to contain, from rat shit to maggots you name it.

All safe to eat just not as appetizing.
