'A Miracle': Walker Survived Four Months Lost in Andes by Eating Rats

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- A 58-year-old Uruguayan man who disappeared four months ago in the remote Andes Mountains was found alive on Sunday, after he spent a brutal winter eating rats and raisins to survive, local media reported.

Raul Fernando Gomez Circunegui in May set out to cross the mountains from Chile to Argentina on foot because his motorcycle broke down. He then reportedly lost his way during a snowstorm.

Argentine officials from the northwestern province of San Juan stumbled upon Gomez in a shelter 2,840 meters, (9,318 feet), above sea level when they traveled there to record snow levels.

A feeble Gomez was able to hobble over and open the shelter's door, alerting the crew to his presence.

"The truth is that this is a miracle. We still can't believe it," San Juan Governor Jose Luis Gioja told the local Diario de Cuyo newspaper. "We let him talk to his wife, his mother and his daughter. ... I asked him, 'Are you a believer?' He told me, 'No, but now I am.'"

Sugar, raisins, rats and the shelter's leftover supplies kept Gomez alive through the Southern Hemisphere's winter. He lost 44 pounds during the ordeal and is dehydrated, according to media reports.

A doctor who examined Gomez was surprised by the man's resilience, according to Uruguayan newspaper El Pais.

"He's a patient with high blood pressure, a history of smoking and signs of undernourishment," the doctor was quoted as saying. But, "he's going to be fine and in a few days we're going to discharge him."

In 1972, a plane carrying an Uruguayan rugby team to Chile crashed in the Andes. Some of the survivors sustained themselves by eating dead bodies.

Photo, below, of an emaciated, bearded Gomez resting on a bed were splashed on the websites of Argentine newspapers Clarin and La Nacion.

Man Lost in Andes for Four Months Found Alive After Eating Rats to Survive

9 September, 2013 19:19

He set out in May to cross the mountains from Chile to Argentina on foot after his motorcycle broke down but lost his way in a snowstorm

A father lost in the freezing Andes for four months has been found alive – after surviving on a diet of rats and raisins.

Stunned rescuers discovered Raul Fernando Gomez Circunegui, 58, emaciated and weak on the floor of a shelter at 9,318ft.

He had lost three stone but at a tearful reunion yesterday his daughter said, “He’ll be OK. It’s a miracle”.

Raul set off in May to cross the treacherous mountains from Chile to Argentina on his 200cc motorbike.

It broke down and the Uruguayan kept going on foot but got lost during a heavy snowstorm as temperatures plunged to -20C.

His wife, Mariela, alerted police but a search had to be called off as the treacherous weather closed all trails across the mountain range.

The dad-of-three was found by officials from Argentina’s San Juan province who had been sent to record snow levels.

He dragged himself to the shelter’s door to alert them and a helicopter lifted him off the mountain.

The civil servant, who has high blood pressure and a history of smoking, told rescuers he ate sugar, raisins and rats he trapped as well as supplies left over in the shelter.

At hospital in Argentina today, his daughter Patricia said, “He’s doing well and is delighted to have been rescued. It’s a miracle.

Dad’s always been adventurous. I’m going to make sure he never does anything like this again."

"He’s got anaemia and he’s suffered dehydration but he’s going to be OK.”

Photos 1 & 4 -San Juan Governor Jose Luis Gioja also met Raul at hospital. He said, “We can’t believe it. San Juan Governor Jose Luis Gioja, (right), as he speaks with Uruguayan Raul Gomez Cincunegui, (bottom), at the Rawson hospital in San Juan, Argentina, on Sunday.

"He was very excited but exhausted. He’s very thin, his bones are sticking through his skin.”

One rescuer said, “We were measuring snow levels when we saw Raul making hand signs to us. He was weak but totally lucid.

"He suffered hunger and anxiety but he kept his hopes up and was very happy to see us. The only thing he had left to eat was a bit of dried meat.”

Medics said Raul, from Bella Union, north Uruguay, would be home within days.

A Uruguayan man rescued from a mountain shelter in the Andes after going missing while trying to cross from Chile to Argentina is facing child sex abuse charges in Chile, officials say.

Raul Gomez Cincunegui, 58, was found emaciated in a remote mountain shelter by Argentine officials on Sunday.

He had survived for four months by eating leftover supplies and whatever else he could catch, including rats.

A prosecutor has asked for his extradition to Chile.

Mr Gomez was on trial in Chile for allegedly abusing an eight year old boy and had been ordered not to leave the country.

On Sunday, Argentine officials from the north-western province of San Juan stumbled across him after arriving in the area near the shelter by helicopter to record snow levels.

'Miracle survival'

An enfeebled Mr Gomez was able to open the shelter's door and alert the crew to his presence.

He was taken to hospital in an emaciated and dehydrated state, but doctors said he was expected to make a full recovery. He is reported to have lost 20kg, (44lb), during his four months in the shelter.

Mr Gomez told his rescuers he got lost in snowstorms after his motorbike broke down.

He had no previous mountaineering experience and did not give an explanation as to why he wanted to cross the Andes.

His rescue was described as, "a miracle," by San Juan Governor Jose Luis Gioja.

Officials in Chile said an arrest warrant for Mr Gomez was issued in July after he missed a court appearance.

Mr Gomez' mother told the Associated Press news agency she did not believe the allegations against him.

"Raul is a good, hard-working man," she said.

From the looks of his torso, I don't think he would have made it much longer.

They mentioned other cases of survivors who ate some of their dead and one where a guy broke a leg after falling off a cliff and lay there for awhile, but, I don't recall how long.

He had someone with him so maybe that helped.
